Cape Cod Was Just Beautiful

Posted on July 4, 2023July 4, 2023 by JEAN

In Cape Cod, we had a chance to stay out on the ‘hook’. Our campground was right in the middle of the Cape Cod National Seashore Park area, so we had a great time exploring here.

  • Atlantic Oaks Campground

At the ranger station for the Cape Cod National Seashore Park, Cole received his official Bark Ranger bandana. I think he looks awesome, what do you think?

We received some pointers from the park rangers on which area of the park to explore first. The young ranger told us to head for the fire road on the north end of the park. She indicated that it was really cool because you got to walk over the dunes. With that information, we set out for a nice walk. The dunes that we encountered were not what we were expecting. We thought that we were going to walk across a typical dune and get out to the water. Not at all. Cole and I walked to the top of a ‘sand mountain’ and all we could see was a ‘sand bowl’, No water in sight! You can see how steep the sand mountain was in the first picture below. Look how small Ed is in the middle of the bushes as we looked down at him from half way up the mountain.

Clearly the young ranger had either never been to the dunes or she was in much better physical shape than any of us!!

Next we checked out the Nauset Lighthouse. Cole loves exploring all these new areas. Especially the smells!

We saw some seals hanging out in the water too.

Next up was a little walk on the beach where Cole was allowed to go.

We were a little surprised to see the signs and flags in the pictures below! Fortunately it was a cool the days that were in Cape Cod, so we had no intentions of going in the water.

We also had a chance to go over to the town of Chatham and see some seals up close. These guys were hanging out by the boats that were off-loading their catch.

Chatham is a beautiful area with enormous houses (but not as big as the Vanderbilt ‘summer cottage’). We found it interesting that the houses are named, with a sign usually above the door or over the garages.

The harbor at Chatham was really pretty.

Speaking of harbors, it’s time for us to leave Cape Cod and head up to Bar Harbor!

    Love Cole’s bandanna! Too cute!
We took the kids camping up in this area many, many years ago. I remember it was such a beautiful area. Make me want to go back again!
