Our first stop in New York was at a campground on Lake Champlain. It was a scenic ride getting there from Vermont.
We stayed at a beautiful private campground that was essentially the homestead of the owner. For this location, I had to call to make the reservation. No online booking. When we checked in, the person opened the file box and pulled out my hand written reservation with all the information that the owner had gathered when she took my reservation months ago. Kind of amazing in this day and age. Our site was beautiful and Cole loved the open field, so he could explore off leash.
One morning I had a chance to put the drone up and get a picture of the lake. It was a little foggy, but the lake was still beautiful.
While in the area, we took a ride to Lake Placid to do a little exploring. There we saw the ski jumps and the Whiteface Mountain ski area. These places look much different (and steep) without snow!
As you cross the bridge over Lake Champlain, you come into the Crowne Point Historic Site, a site where ruins of two fortifications from the colonial wars between the British and French stand. The French built Fort St. Frederic here between 1734 and 1737 was used it as a base for raids on British settlements in New York and New England. As a result, the British mounted various expeditions to take control of Crown Point, and in 1759 they were finally successful. They immediately began construction of new fortifications that they called “His Majesty’s Fort of Crown Point”. Enclosing over seven acres, this was one of the largest built by the British in North America. The remains of the officers’ and enlisted men’s quarters can still been seen today. We really enjoyed walking around this area.
After Lake Champaign, we continued west to Green Lake State Park, which is located just east of Syracuse. The campground and the park were just beautiful. We had a chance to walk two miles around the namesake of the park – Green Lake. We also took a look at the amazing and hilly golf course that was part of the park. From the clubhouse at the top of the hill, we were able to get a great view of the lake. In the last picture I sent the drone up from our campsite to get another perspective of the lake. Whatever way you look at it, it was just spectacular.
We loved our time here, but it was time to head to Niagara Falls!!
