We have completed our last local trip before we head out for the summer. This short trip took us back to the place where we spent the last night of our Fall 2022 trip, Reed Bingham State Park in Adel, GA. When we were there last year, we considered staying and extra night or two, but just couldn’t make it happen. This time we had four nights to check out all that the park offered.
Our arrival at the park was a little scary for me. When we were about 5 miles from our exit off of I-75, we saw this in front of us.
The sky was getting very dark ahead of us. Once we got to our exit, both of our phones were going off with warning sounds. When I looked at my phone, the message was “Active alert, Tornado Warning”. All of the weather maps that I had looked at showed the storms well north of where we were, so I wasn’t overly concerned. Once we got off the highway, we only had 6 miles to reach the campground. We made it about three miles and I saw a wall of water in front of us. It was raining so hard it was difficult to see anything and the wind was blowing really hard. The sides of the road had rivers of water even though it hadn’t been raining that long. It was a very scary ride. I thought for sure we were going to be blown off the road. Ed kept saying, ‘as long as the wind is only blowing in one direction, we have nothing to worry about’. As we made the turn into the campground access road, there were pickup trucks pulled off the main road. When the locals are worried…
Once we arrived at the ranger station, it had mostly stopped raining. After I took a few minutes to collect myself, I went and checked in. One of the rangers was kind enough to tell me he was pretty sure that there had been a tornado just to the west of where we were. I could have done without that piece of information!
We are so grateful that we had the opportunity to visit this state park again. There is so much to do and so many trails to explore. Here is a map of the trails that are available.
Cole had a great time exploring all of the trails that Reed Bingham has to offer. This is a wonderful park for camping, boating, walking and so much more. Check it out if you are in the area.
After we left Wyoming, we had several more National Parks on our list.
Next up was Rocky Mountain National park in Colorado. We stayed just outside of the park so we had some beautiful views. As we traveled on the park roads, we saw this guy.
What was even more amazing was later that evening, we saw this, in our campground just steps from Dash.
