So, as expected, we are experiencing a lot of ‘firsts’ as we travel on our journey. Traveling to and through Kansas was one of them. We continue to learn new things on our journey as well. One thing we have learned is that you always have to be aware of the weather. Not only where you are, but also where you are going, and along the way to your next stop. Fortunately, we have some very good tools to help us. One of those tools is the Windy app. You can also go to their web site, https://www.windy.com/ . This is a great resource for not only the wind speeds, but the current weather and weather forecasts. When you are driving a 38′ x 13′ box down the road and towing a vehicle, it is important to know how much wind you are going to have and which direction it is coming from. Now that you have the set up information for this post, let me tell you the story.
We knew from looking at Windy, that the winds traveling from Kansas City to Minooka Park in Kansas were going to be 25+ mph with gusts to 40 mph coming from the south by midday. Since we were heading west, we were going to be continually pushed toward the shoulder of the highway by the wind. We decided that the best thing to do would be to leave at day break and get to our destination before the winds got too crazy. So we left at 6:00am to minimize our exposure. In doing so, we got to see this…
Along the way we saw a lot of these and boy were they moving with all that wind!
We arrived at the beautiful Minooka park by 10:00am and pulled right into our spot by the water. The sunrises and the Strawberry moon were just beautiful. The wind blew so hard the first day and a half we were there that we had to keep the full wall slide closed because we slide topper was getting the full force of the south wind and we were very concerned that it would get torn right off of Dash. Oh yea, and it was over 100 degrees too. Welcome to Kansas!
While we were there we drove around lake Wilson, which is the Army Core of Engineers lake where the campground is located. We were amazed at how hilly the area was. We thought that Kansas was very flat.
We drove over to the town of Wilson, just a few miles away. Wilson is know as the Czech Capital of Kansas. We found an interesting sight in Wilson. The world’s largest Czech egg. This was a really cool find for us. Over the years, Ed’s mom had given us her eggs that are painted like this. We have quite a collection of them (not this big of course!).
Kansas doe flatten out as your journey goes farther west. We are in Juneau(6/22) where it is cloudy and about 55 degrees this morning. We have been posting some pictures on Facebook. Safe travels.
Glad you are safe from all that wind. It can be treacherous. We are in Oregon on our river cruise. Been a bit chilly but now it’s beautiful. Going home Thursday.
Wow, I don’t think I want to meet the chicken that laid that egg!! Very cool indeed – the egg that is! Once again, some great scenery along your way. Hope the winds don’t continue to give you problems though. Have fun!
After we left Wyoming, we had several more National Parks on our list.
Next up was Rocky Mountain National park in Colorado. We stayed just outside of the park so we had some beautiful views. As we traveled on the park roads, we saw this guy.
What was even more amazing was later that evening, we saw this, in our campground just steps from Dash.
