One of the first days that we were in Wall we took a drive down the main road through the Badlands. The views were just incredible during the day. Check out the slideshow below.
We have seen a lot of wildlife on our trip so far. However, we had been wanting to see some Bighorn sheep. They say that the wildlife is most active at daybreak and just before night fall. Since it doesn’t get dark until around 10:00 in this part of the country, I knew we had no shot at being up that late. On our last day there, I had the bright idea that we should go watch the sunrise in the Badlands. Daylight begins around 4:00AM, so at 3:30 we left our campsite and took the short ride to Hay Butte Overlook on Sage Rim Road.
We had the place to ourselves, so we set up our chairs, Cole’s blanket and drank our coffee while we waited for the sun to come up.
To be clear, it was very dark, but the camera on my phone is so good, that it takes amazing pictures even when it is dark.
We were getting ready to leave our spot and head to Pinnacles Overlook and the Yellow Mounds Overlook. Just as we were packing up our stuff, I spotted these guys. The had come up from the valley below.
We drove by them as we went to our next photo spot.
Initially, we thought these were more pronghorns because of the white hind end on them (it was still kind of dark). It wasn’t until we looked at the pictures when we got back to Dash that we realized that these were actually female Bighorn sheep!! (Full disclosure, Mr. Googlie helped us identify what the were.) Although we didn’t see the male with the big curved horns, we were still very excited.
Pinnacle overlook provided some more beautiful sights. The views at daybreak are much different than those in the middle of the day. The sun shining partially on the formations, gives them a whole different look.
The Yellow Mounds Overlook adds a little bit more color to the formations. Slideshow is below.
The Badlands National Park is something to see no matter what time of the day you go. We were so glad we went for the sunrise. Definitely worth it! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
After we left Wyoming, we had several more National Parks on our list.
Next up was Rocky Mountain National park in Colorado. We stayed just outside of the park so we had some beautiful views. As we traveled on the park roads, we saw this guy.
What was even more amazing was later that evening, we saw this, in our campground just steps from Dash.
